Revolution is a 2006, 4-minute experimental video by Egyptian-French visual artist and filmmaker Khaled Hafez. The work is shot in Hi-Definition transformed on mini-DV in 2006. The video was commissioned by the First Singapore Biennale, directed by Fumio Nanjo, and selected by curator Martina Corgnati for Nanjo’s networking curators’ team. Synopsis An experimental screen is split on the three Egyptian flag colors: Red, White and Black. The colors represent the three promises of the 1952 Pan-Arab military coup d’état / revolution: Social equality, Liberty and Unity. Throughout the 4 minutes, insinuations and innuendos question what remains of the broken promises: the social equality of the military gun, the pseudo-liberty of the transcontinental corporate economy, and the unity of chopping heads representing the worldwide rising right wing religious fundamentalism.
