The Monads
About
'The Monads' derives from the ideas of the mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) who assumed that the universe consists of “monads”, invisible elementary particles equipped with a certain degree of consciousness. Although they appear to act individually, they eventually merge wonderfully into a greater divine plan. In the installation one can hear sound recordings of wind blowing through tree leaves. A series of rotating speakers create a mix of direct and reflective sounds where the source appears to be closeby and far away. The control of sound and movement is approached from a meta-level. Instead of controlling each individual unit separately, there is a system of conditions by which the entities can move freely. Hereby various behavioural patterns arise through time. The timing, speed, volume of sound, motors, and the relation between these formed the frame of rules that were set for this self-controlled system.
