About
Proof of Salawaki is a short video following artist Mirjam Dalire’s search for traces of her virtual character, Salawaki. The work examines what it means to be present in an increasingly online world, where digital existence can both extend and obscure identity. Rooted in the artist’s lived experience as a Filipina navigating restricted mobility due to visa limitations, the series asks whether a virtual self can hold as much reality as a physical one. The videos weave together elements of documentation, augmented reality, and digital performance. Through AR screen captures of her immediate surroundings, Dalire allows Salawaki to inhabit the physical spaces around her, creating moments where the boundaries between artist and avatar blur. Each episode reveals a different dimension of this coexistence, exploring how digital selves can become both witnesses to and extensions of one’s lived reality. Constructed through AR technology, screen recording, and performative engagement with digital environments, the work translates personal limitations of mobility into a creative language. By overlaying virtual traces onto real-world footage, Dalire transforms her screen into both a canvas and a stage. The resulting videos are intimate portraits of mediated existence—part diary, part speculative fiction. Proof of Salawaki reflects on authenticity, agency, and belonging in a hyperconnected yet unevenly accessible digital landscape. Situated within a hyper-online and hyper-global art ecology shaped by networks, algorithms, and blockchain economies, the work considers how presence is constructed and sustained online.
