Synopsis

Reality Sandwich is an ongoing, place-responsive, subaltern video series that unfolds through performative encounters with artists across diverse geographies. Inspired by absurdist gestures and relational practices, each episode begins with a single question—“What does a Reality Sandwich mean to you?”—and evolves through unscripted, daylong collaborations with local practitioners. Filmed in cities such as New York, Gwangju, Shanghai, Bacolod, Seoul, Rotterdam, Jogja, Kawasaki, and Riyadh the series resists conventional documentary structure, favoring instead a poetics of slowness, improvisation, and affective entanglement.

In the second episode of "Reality Sandwich," Ho Bin Kim travels to Gwangju, South Korea, to explore the concept of a "Reality Sandwich" through the perspectives of Ainhoa Martínez, curator of the Spanish Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale, and Summer, a Korean artist. 

The journey begins with Ho Bin, Ainhoa, and Summer traveling to Bosung Beach. Here, Ainhoa reveals that she had once planned to visit this beach with someone special but never did, making this unfulfilled plan her "Reality Sandwich." To symbolize letting go of this unfulfilled reality, Ainhoa burns a match with "Bosung" written on it. Similarly, Summer burns a match to signify the end of her marriage, her own "Reality Sandwich."

After this poignant ritual, the group visits a nearby café to discuss and define what a "Reality Sandwich" means to them. They discover that the Spanish dictionary does not include the word "sandwich," leading them to coin the term "sandwich de realidad." They decide to formalize this definition and add it to the official Spanish dictionary. 

Their adventure continues as they hike up a mountain to record the definition of "sandwich de realidad" in English, Spanish, and Korean. The trio then visits a post office to send their recording and definition to the Real Academia Española. The episode concludes with them receiving a response from the Real Academia Española, indicating that they need more material, suggesting a potential for officially adding "sandwich de realidad" to the Spanish dictionary.
