About

Elemental Studies (2023–25) is a visceral exploration of the fractured dialogue between human industry and the ancient pillars of our world: Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. This cinematic cycle inhabits the volatile space where the peaceful and the savage collide—a stark witness to Mother Nature’s primal system of checks and balances in an era of unprecedented climate upheaval. Stripped of color to reveal the raw, alchemical texture of our environment, these twelve monochrome shorts function as a surreal mantra, inviting the viewer to get lost in the grain of the earthly while offering a necessary, meditative pause to observe the shapeshifting mechanics of a planet in flux. The project’s soul is rooted in a massive, borderless collaboration that transcends the boundaries of traditional filmmaking. The series features a definitive sonic architecture crafted by a global collective, beginning with twelve distinct international composers who scored the individual films to translate the "broken overlap" of the elements into immersive soundscapes. This resonance is expanded further by a secondary group of artists who provided "re-imagined" interpretations, resulting in a total of twenty-five composers and sound artists from eighteen different countries. This monumental international effort is preserved as a deluxe double compact disc set via Carpe Sonum Novum Records (USA), serving as a definitive auditory map and a global requiem for our fragile ecosystem. The technical execution of the series is led by director TJ Norris, with the comprehensive soundtrack available through Carpe Sonum Novum Records at carpesonum.bandcamp.com/album/elemental-studies. Three years in the making, this project has evolved into a collaborative labor of love—a visceral melange of audio-visual synergy that functions as a rhythmic pulse for an ailing planet. We exist at a definitive crossroads in history where, regardless of medium or style, the creative voice must serve as a conduit for the Earth’s distress. This series is an act of collective witness, pairing my layered, monochromatic film work with the sonic architectures of two dozen international artists to create a dialogue that demands both afterthought and action. It is a cinematic "exquisite corpse" stretched across borders, a global response to a world in transition. At the heart of this narrative lies a meditation on the four ancient pillars—Air, Earth, Fire, and Water—elements that have served as the functional core of organic life since the dawn of time. However, the legacy of the Industrial Revolution has fractured this ancestral bond, pushing the dialogue between humankind and Mother Nature into a state of violent imbalance. In our modern era, the traditional symbols of stability, expansion, rebirth, and fluidity have been transmuted into harbingers of dread: the fracking-induced quake, the predatory forest fire, the atmospheric wrath of the tornado, and the rising flood. We are living through a dark alchemy where the very forces that sustain us have been stressed into a savage system of checks and balances. This series of film shorts takes artistic license with these elemental shifts, interpreting them through a non-narrative and illogical lens that mirrors the organic unpredictability of a planet in flux. By stripping away the distraction of color, the work allows the viewer to get lost in the raw, grainy textures of the earthly, transforming each film into a surreal mantra—a necessary, meditative pause in a time of seismic change. The original scores, a massive collaborative undertaking involving twenty-five artists from eighteen countries, provide the "soul" for these visual meditations. Together, we have constructed a sonic and visual map of our fragile ecosystem, inviting the world to simply breathe within the imbalance and acknowledge the inherent capacity for change that resides between humankind and nature’s wrath.
