About

Lament is an installation and performance about extreme wildfires, death and ecology, inviting the audience to explore emotions linked changing ecologies. The installation is an immaculate, glowing death bed. On the floor there are heaps of soil from burnt forests and, hovering low, a hundred organically-shaped glass sculptures that contain soil microbes, charcoal, and moss. Soil microbes and moss will unfold their slow stories during the show.  This setting hosts a 45-minute long live act for solo performer, cello and live electronics. In a contemporary lamentation, a tentacular creature of the soil crawls and interacts with the mournful yet lyrical musical score. The immaculate setting transforms as the creature moves and smears soil and charcoal powder around, leaving violent and expressionist traces. The field recordings in the music explore the ‘acoustic void’ wildfires, deprived of familiar sounds like rustling of the leaves or bird chirping, and reveal the sound of burnt wood which reminds of soft cries or resonating voices. Lament is an artwork by Margherita Pevere. Music for cello and fields recordings composed and performed by Ivan Penov. Commissioned by the EC Joint Research Centre in the framework of the SciArt project’s Resonances IV cycle on ‘NaturArchy: Towards a Natural Contract’. Filmed at ‘NaturArchy: Towards a Natural Contract’ / iMAL, Art Center for Digital Cultures & Technology, Brussels. Camera and editing: Daniele Lucchini.
