For Art Athina 2024, Charitonidi has created a new ensemble of sculptures accompanied by a performance. This ensemble, titled Frequencies of Solitude, is composed of ceramic sculptures designed as shapes of the breath. Each sculpture is a functioning whistle with its own sound. An echo pattern covers them all and amplifies the idea of radio-waves spreading in time and space. The performance is an activation of the whistles, as units of communication representing individuals and their subjectivity. Four specific ones, one for each cardinal direction, are used by children to call the audience and guide people through the architecture before meeting all in its center, finally forming a group identity and coexisting harmonically. Those sculptures are combined with adjacent works from previous series, enlarging the understanding of Charitonidi’s work. Found objects and pictural forms are taken parts in the studio life and defines her as a multi-disciplinary artist. By contrasting shape and sound, the artist has built echo chambers with mutant shape. Half animal half mineral, coming directly from the Earth’s crust. The firing process is a revolution of atmospherical condition, macro and micro phenomenons, crystallising the length of a sidereal day. In her work, the artist forges a strong link between artificial and natural life. As everything comes from the ground, it gets manipulated and shaped as an abstract golem. Extraction is our main modus operandi and it finds its source from the archaic time. However the dichotomy fails to embrace the complexity of the process. As it comes at one, everything belongs to everything. From earth to fire, to air to water, all the elements are encompassed by a performative act and brought to life in a chaotic polyphony.
