About

Piñata blends the narrative trajectories of Marco Polo and Doctor Who to startling and entertaining effect. Long before the Barbie movie, a hot pink Tardis materialises in a field near the Silk Road. Out spills a feminist from the future. This short film manages to call into question the veracity of oral narratives, cultural purity, patriarchy, and true love, and does it all with an axe. Piñata is based on a Chinese translation of Knox’s poem by Nobel Prize winning translator Mabel Lee (Gao Xingjian, 'Soul Mountain'). CREDITS Marco Polo: Thomas A Rivard The Doctor's Companion: Elena Knox The Fire: Teik Kim Pok Second unit director: Lindsay Webb Camera and stills: Matt Fatches, Maylei Hunt, Lindsay Webb Set: Lean Productions Music: Min Huifen Translation: Mabel Lee
