About

A performance commissioned by the Asia Culture Center, "La Tierra no Esconde los Muertos" (The Earth Does Not Hide the Dead) is Regina José Galindo’s poignant response to the memory of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. Twelve participants and the artist arranged earth into 13 small mounds resembling volcanic peaks, symbolically rooted to one another at the plaza’s base. The work declares that sacrifices—no matter how unrecognized officially—cannot be erased or buried. Through this powerful visual metaphor, Galindo ensures that truth endures, growing through the soil and across generations.
