Levee - AE Sonic Narratives is a sound collage of ordinary individuals residing in the different Emirates of the UAE. The start of a bigger creative experiment, the piece compiles a portrayal of sonic narratives of a memory, moment, reflection, or space in the UAE that I ask people to capture through sound. Whether a voice note of thoughts, a recital of poetry, a recording of a park close to home, music composed on an instrument; whatever way one wants to tell some kind of story of themselves, someone else, a moment or place through sound. As the work is an open-ended piece, I want to bring light to the ordinary sonic narratives that exist in the country and create a space of performative play with the recordings compiled under a single sound piece. Questions of authorial intent and narrative come to play as people openly accept to send me recordings; what narrative do I want to portray, and do I want the audience to hear the same story? Not quiet, as I realised there is no singular narrative when it comes to the shared sounds, all is influenced by our surroundings - stories are never completely self-centered and field recordings are always a product of a multiple of sounds. The sound piece is accompanied by an all-black canvas, myself in the background, with GPS coordinates of where the recordings took place popping up on screen during the recording duration.
