About

Wall of Gazes was created in collaboration with the Argentinian neuroscientist Mariano Sigman, using the assistance of eye-tracking technology. The project examines the phenomenology of the “gaze” and how it reflects identity in the world — revealing the truth of how we engage with others, the parts of the face we see, and the absence of the “unseen”. Created by generative software, Wall of Gazes combines science and art to explore not only the complexities of human perception, but how technology can be taught to recreate it. Portrait images are revealed by means of the movements of the eyes of many persons simultaneously. Around 150 Participants sat in front of portrait images displayed on a screen in front of them. An infrared camera and a special software recorded the movement of their eyes around the portraits for 20 sec. All the movements of the eyes were stored in a “database of gazes”. A customized software takes stored data and renders the portrait by tracing the gazes in slow motion.
