About
"Reverse proxy" is a feature film made entirely with images captured from computer screens in real time throughout 2014: Davi Reis is a twenty-something middle-class computer technician living in São Paulo, Brazil. What seems like a perfectly ordinary guy is actually a disaster waiting to happen. He loses his job and is reeled in by his best friend Luis Pires into a plot that could change the entire political landscape of their country. Not so much through direct involvement into emerging forms of activism — the many internet-orchestrated street demonstrations that voice all kinds of unease towards the government, bus fare hikes, the 2014 World Cup and countless other issues. But actually through Luis’ plan, which involves his ex-girlfriend, Verônica, in order to get Davi a job at Vox Populi polling company. Seeking fame as a journalist in the 21st century, Luis wants to use Davi’s hacking knowledge to gain direct access to raw data that could prove right his suspicion that politically motivated data fraud is taking place at higher levels What neither of them suspect is the final outcome of their actions. Although it is a fictional story, the characters interact with the "real" world: in the background of the internet, what is shown actually existed and happened. Ultimately, the separation between reality and fiction, or between the real and the virtual, becomes blurred, and in some ways, the film approaches a "mockumentary" (a fake documentary). At the time the film was made, the terms "Fake News" and "disinformation" were not as widespread as they are today. There was a kind of inconsistency of ideas or memefication of the imagination; where symbols lost their connection to their origin, they were being appropriated to the point of suggesting ideas essentially opposed to those they suggested in their formation. The film ended up operating and recording the beginning of what is now a norm in politics. Movements like the " Jornadas de Junho," the "Arab Spring," and "Occupy Wall Street" emerge through the logic of the internet, but are appropriated, inverted, and deconstructed by that same logic, enabling a "backwash" of an extreme right present in several countries. The same means that enable the socialization and organization of these social movements are the same ones used to dismantle, monitor, and persecute them. The same mechanisms that the reverse proxy character uses to communicate, to have fun, to get information, to socialize, to flirt, and to rebel are used against him. Every process of emancipation that the protagonist finds in the use of the internet is actually a sadistic process of control.
