30 sec, 16mm film, hand-processed, color, silent, 2021 ABSENT/PRESENT (Decay 30x) is a crossover from photography to experimental film making, questioning the correlation between photographic image, representation, and movement. It seeks to explore the materiality and temporality of the image making, based on the archetype of 24-frames/second and “the illusion of the movement” that it implies in the human eyes. In ABSENT/PRESENT (Decay 30x) a decaying flower bouquet in my home is documented, within 30 days, on 30 stripes of 16mm film. Still photos are made with a pinhole camera —which I made specifically for the length of 24 frames of 16mm film (about 18cm)—to capture still photos on 16mm film, which are then flipped vertically in order to get animated as a movie, through which, the relativity of time to length, gives the possibility of translating length into time. The pinhole camera was used as a low-tech device for employing a relatively blind way of image-making. In which, the lack of viewfinder imposes a lack of control; as there is no possibility of adjusting composition and previewing the subject in front of the camera.
