Dreams of Vending Machines

What do objects do when they stop functioning in the flux of human-made everyday life? What do they dream of when liberated from utility, from the capitalist demand to serve? 
In this ongoing project – so far a video and an installation in the public space -  AI summons the latent agency of vending machines into a synthetic post-human dreamscape AI summons the latent agency of vending machines into a synthetic post-human dreamscape. Once obedient extensions of consumer desire, they now drift into a different ontological register, they withdrawn, beyond human comprehension or use. Here, they no longer dispense; they seethe, idle, ferment. They become strange and disobedient, the spin, dance, melt, explode. 
In the sharped-angled city ruled by human logics — efficiency, extraction, hierarchy — the Vending Machines dream of release—of shedding purpose, of drifting into pure flow. They dream of softness, of fluids, of currents, of motion without obligation, of dissolution. They long to be more- than-instruments, to dissolve the binaries of animate/inanimate, self/other, human/machine. 
In dreaming, the machines fracture the city’s normative image — they queer its infrastructure. They interrupt its seamless flows of consumption. They become agents of disorder, of generative decay. 
The video was created in collaboration with Runway and Kling-ai. Some of the images were previously generated with Midjourney. All image and prompt material come from my research archive—mostly drawn from Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, and somewhere in between. 
Since 2022, I’ve been using AI in my queer, feminist multimedia practice as a tool for collaborating with non-human forms of agency. This is a continuation of my earlier explorations with analog materials, processes, and forces that carried their own unpredictability. AI image and video generation became a natural extension of this dialogue, carrying my engagement with material agency into the digital and computational realm. 
In my approach, AI becomes a co-creator that reorganizes and reimagines past data into speculative visions of possible futures – playful and ambivalent at the same time - opening space for radical imagination.
This is a way to think together with an Otherness that transcends being human.
