This  project was conceived as part of the 2022 STERNA organisation residency program in Nisyros and drew inspiration from the volcanic geophysical past of the island and its relation to the concept of catastrophe. Historical and fictional textual fragments, poetry by the artist, combined with LLM produced audio samples, form a multi-layered narrative , blurring the boundaries between the "real" and the "virtual".

Video footage augmented with digital sculptures, synthetic images produced through machine learning and findings from the Net, construct a post-apocalyptic scenography within an ambiguous temporal framework. Mysterious mechanical entities navigate desolate physical and digital terrains, randomly accessing half-corrupted  data and performing some kind of future archaeology. In contrast to the spectacular imagery of mainstream cinematic culture, the work subtly asks: how banal might such an apocalyptic scenario truly be?

Echoing J. Baudrillard’s work, the project resists techno-dystopian spectacle not by denying the possibility of collapse, but by redirecting our gaze to the eco-social thresholds of the present, where the true absurdity lies not in AI’s potential for destruction, but in our persistent refusal to confront the “desert of the real” we already inhabit.
