Winner of the CIFRA Award 2025 The Space Between Becomes Us is a meditation on how I think we come into being through one another—how the unseen space between us might carry memory, feeling, and healing. This work reflects a desire not for answers, but for mutual understanding. For the kind of peace that emerges when we let ourselves listen and become, together. The Space Between Becomes Us is a multimedia video work rooted in my practice of expressive movement, sound-making, and speculative world-building. Drawing from the behavior of slime mould and the Zen Buddhist teaching of interbeing by peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh, I imagine a quiet future where survival arises not through certainty or control but through attention, empathy, and willingness to respond. Set in a slow, imagined world shaped by attunement, the video features motion-captured figures and soft, organic blobs moving gently through one another’s presence, sometimes meeting, sometimes drifting apart. Their gestures come from my own body. I moved as if I were reaching for light, for connection, and for growth, freely and instinctively. That raw footage became the base for the animated form. Every motion—whether stretching outward or quietly pulling back—carries that original feeling of curiosity and care. Like slime mould, these figures learn by sensing. They grow toward what feels right, and retreat from what doesn’t, leaving behind glowing traces of connection that appear and dissolve like memory. The soundscape is composed of whispered phrases and analog synth tones, layering breath, resonance, and subtle vibration. Rather than narrating, the sound invites the viewer inward— into a space of co-sensing and quiet recognition.
