'Creative destruction' is a core concept in economics, identified by Joseph Schumpeter in 1942. It essentially posits that change is inescapable, with old ways of doing things constantly being superseded by new ones. I came across this concept while reading the on Word Economic Forum about the impact of ai on the job market.
I've also been contemplating the destruction of ancient forests and the irreplaceable loss of healthy, diverse habitats, even when new trees are planted. While the term 'creative destruction' has a compelling ring to it, it is arguably an oxymoron, especially considering it was coined before the advent of atomic bombs and before we could fully measure the impact of mass consumption on our environment.
I wonder how we will increase our consumption to meet the sudden increased labour efficiency that developments in ai will bring about.
