2$ Meal | Labour in a Single Shot

The artwork is one of a series of images of labour I recorded in Chicago, USA in 2019. It has been realized thanks to the support of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Chicago's Goethe Institute. It is part of the project Labour in a Single Shot, started by Antje Ehmann and Harun Farocki in 2011. Labour in a Single Shot is a 21st century encyclopedia of human labor that represents labour processes in eighteen countries over five continents. For eight years, video artist Harun Farocki, curator Antje Ehmann, and filmmaker Eva Stotz have invited over 500 filmmakers to investigate labour processes in their countries and near surroundings. Each video must depict labor issues for 2 minutes or less. Each video must comprise a single shot. The results of the project have been shown in 20 cities worldwide to critical acclaim, including the Venice Biennale, in exhibitions full of glimmering screens with each representing a different city: Bengaluru, Berlin, Boston, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Geneva, Hangzhou, Hanoi, Johannesburg, Juarez, Lisbon, Lodz, Mexico City, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Tel Aviv, Vilnius and Marseille.
