Commonality of Beliefs [Co:beliefs] is a cinematic exploration into the intriguing world of superstitions, examining how these beliefs foster cultural cohesion and remain relevant in contemporary society. Our journey began with a simple question: “Why do people still believe in superstitions?” This led to the creation of a layered short film that reimagines superstitions not as irrational relics, but as emotional responses to ambiguity, anxiety, and the desire for agency. The film is complemented by a VR experience and a 360° film, both built within a narrative game environment, offering deeper immersion into its themes. At its core, Co:beliefs explores the emotional dimensions people carry, especially in relation to uncertainty and the digital realm. It expresses collective emotions through symbolic storytelling across three realms: Realm 1: Fear of Uncertainty Superstitions emerge as attempts to create patterns and meaning amidst chaos like faint stars in the darkness. Realm 2: Hope and Reassurance They offer emotional refuge, planting seeds of hope and providing moments of comfort in despair. Realm 3: Desire for Control These rituals reflect our longing to steer fate; like tying ribbons around trees, we symbolically shape our path. By rendering these layered emotional experiences through digital media, Co:beliefs becomes a modern “recipe” for emotional connection and cultural continuity. It embodies the emotional essence of Future Recipes by revealing how shared superstitions serve as tools for emotional survival in an unstable world, offering a poetic and symbolic response that provides presence, comfort, and meaning.
