A polyphonic signal is split into individual streams and dispersed through a field of speakers. Waves of sound react repeatedly to an inaudible threat, evoking the swarming, defensive behavior of prey animals evading an unseen predator. This shifting murmuration of individual frequencies creates a constantly evolving harmonic environment, wherein simple rules conjure a complex sonic ecology of physical sound; living, and breathing. In this new work A Predatory Chord, Frost questions what constitutes “nature”, inviting reflection on our complex relationship with the natural world, and simultaneously confronts the materiality of the modular broadcast systems that have defined his career as a live performer; here the PA is repositioned such that it’s by-design invisibility is transformed into an innately visual, sculptural medium
