Silence, a Drone is a real-time sound work created by artist Rhett Tsai using Max. In this work, the artist uses his own face as a foundation and employs GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) AI tool to fictionalize eighteen avatars of a citizen named Joe, who lives in a smart city. Each avatar delivers a vocal narrative describing stories of human dilemmas in relation to the smart city. Through the intervention of granular synthesis, the words that are forbidden from being spoken transform into elongated drones that cannot be decoded or clearly heard during the real-time performance of the sound work. You are free to read and interpret the Chinese poetry written by the artist from any direction.
