About

This video work by Lucas Glenn was first exhibited as a component of an installation titled "My Horse was Hit By Lightning." The installation was exhibited in collaboration with artist Mat Glenn in the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art's window gallery. Made from found and modified footage, "My Fishing Gear" was projected via a Sony Playstation 4 setup. The setup reverse-projected visuals onto plastic/Dura-Lar, and was positioned behind the projection itself on a wall-mounted aluminum shelf. The video uses a recording from the video game title, Red Dead Redemption 2, to simulate a 19th century scene where a character catches, holds, and stows a fish before riding away on his horse. The background cuts together a sequence of commercial footage; promotional shots of straps, fibres, gloves, body armour, and protective gear are cut together, at times distorted by their magnification. The six-minute video attempts to create friction between the equipment of nature domination and the romance of nature domination. In quiet moments where the figure pauses— holding the fish and looking out at the water— categories dissolve. Poetics and irony, reality and simulation, nature and culture, human and nonhuman, equipment and user.
