#4. The Art of Being a Cyborg: Moon Ribas

One of the most well-known artists working on expanding human body capabilities through technology is Stelarc (*1946), an Australian performance artist. The artist connected his body to giant robotic sculptures that he could control using hand gestures. He’s renowned for grafting a lab-grown ear onto his arm. In one of the performances, he added to his body a third arm, driven by his own muscle impulses. Stelarc underscores the fusion of human and technological elements, asserting, “We have always been prosthetically augmented bodies.” This edition introduces us to Moon Ribas (*1985), a Catalan cyborg artist best known for developing the Seismic Sense, an online seismic sensor that allows her to perceive earthquakes taking place anywhere on the planet through real-time vibrations.
