Memory Compression makes visible what digital systems normally conceal. Each work in the series places everyday video compression codecs (H.264 in this work) under deliberate stress, forcing it to compress smooth 48-bit colour gradients it cannot adequately resolve. The result is not failure but revelation: the algorithm's internal logic surfaces as visible texture, a mosaic of compression artefacts that expose the non-neutrality of the technology itself. These artefacts are the codec's own handwriting. What appears as noise is in fact a material record of the system negotiating constraints, a trace of the process that ordinarily disappears behind the image it produces. Each work is accompanied by a soundtrack recorded in live improvisation while the compression unfolds in real time — a direct, unrepeatable response to the visual field as it emerges. Rather than illustrating or explaining the image, the audio meets it as an equal: humanising the artefacts, drawing out their emotional character, and grounding an otherwise purely technological process in something bodily and contingent. Together, image and sound ask what it means that the systems through which we record, store, and revisit experience are not transparent carriers but active shapers of it. In making the compression visible (and audible) the series reframes it: not as a technical problem to be solved but as a site where the real is being quietly remade.
