During the Miocene epoch, five millions years ago, the Mediterranean was a desertic landscape. In the 1970s, the Glomar Challenger, a ship equipped for oceanic drilling, proves the so-called ‘Messinian salinity crisis’ via extracting sediment samples from below the deep seafloor. Diving into such geological event, Under any sea lies a desert plays with the oceanographer’s dream of emptying the seas to expose and observe the marine abysses. The 3 channel video installation blends images of a sunken roman settlement in Naples, the Rotterdam harbour and a summer solstice ritual in the Dutch island of Texel. The accompanying sound is the syren's voice that sings in Venice to communicate to civilians the expected level of 'acqua alta' (high tide).
