WHEN ANIMALS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP is an art video created using original texts FROM Story Generator (1985) with new AI generated images. This video shows some of the texts and images shown at the Reimagine Tomorrow 1954-2024 exhibition in Essen (2024). A photo book and exhibition are planned for this work. Background The Story Generator emerged during England's BSE farming crisis, known as "mad cow disease." I transformed news of this pre-Covid animal pandemic, caused by experimental farming practices, into a series of dark procedural fictions where different human-abused species – cows, wolves, snakes – rise up against their human oppressors in unpredictable and startling ways. The work's methodical deconstruction and rebuilding of narrative creates striking juxtapositions that reveal new meanings while maintaining thematic coherence. This work anticipates many concerns central to contemporary AI discourse, and addresses the unpredictable ramifications of underestimating mother nature.
