Water

It shows a large number of human figures taken from social media submerged beneath a synthetic water surface. As the figures are in a state of continuous transformation, they traverse a wide array of identities, profiles and trends. The setting thus resembles a crowd scene of online society in which by zooming in a myriad of details can be spotted just like in a hidden object painting by Bruegel or his contemporaries. Yet, the perpetual morphing of the image introduces a sense of arbitrariness (or freedom?) which is mirrored by the viewer's free-floating scrolling across the screen, finding oneself amidst the debris of interchangeable profiles. As much as water stands for fluidity, it can stand for flood. Created as part of a residency at the FACT Liverpool studio lab.
