The Slanted Grove
A wanderer loses his way in the NET-2000 Dark Forest — and stumbles upon something waiting to be found. Deep within the NET-2000 Dark Forest, a wanderer becomes lost. What he discovers there is The Slanted Grove, a place that exists between eras, between memory and myth, between the world that the early internet once promised and the digital landscape we now inhabit. From that threshold, the question becomes: where does he go from here? Drawing from the deep reserves of the GeoCities archive, The Slanted Grove takes adventurous viewers on a journey that moves simultaneously backward and forward in time — into a terrain of digital decay, tender obsolescence, and unexpected wonder. Handmade puppets crafted through 3D-printing techniques share the screen with hundreds of animated GIF images sourced from the Internet Archive web project, each one a small artifact of a vanished visual culture. The film cross-fades state-of-the-art sound design and editing with the ancient architecture of the fairytale, weaving together these materials into a story that has never been witnessed before, and a record of something that will never come again. It is at once an elegy and an adventure: a love letter to the early internet's folk imagination, and a map through the ruins it left behind.
