The Red Shoes

This choreographic para-fiction 3 screen film investigates how nonhuman matter choreographs human bodies. Informed by new materialist feminism and queer ecology, The Red Shoes explores in-between-human entities such as the fetus, suspended between life and non-life, as unstable agents of movement. The work asks how planetary systems, environmental toxins and biological particles act upon the human body as choreographic forces. Referencing historical fungal outbreaks and anomalous meteorological events, the performance constructs a para-fictional archive that destabilizes anthropocentric notions of agency, purity and control. It proposes a queer-materialist understanding of motion, contamination and involuntary embodiment.
