The making & painting of "Creation Voodoo"
Concept: "Creation Voodoo" explores the different stories we create to explain where we come from and how the world works. It brings together religious imagery, science, medicine, entertainment, and consumer culture to suggest that our ideas about creation are shaped by many different influences. Rather than choosing between faith and science, the painting puts them into the same visual world. It asks what happens when ancient beliefs and modern discoveries become mixed together with the images and messages we consume every day. Context: For centuries, people have looked to religion and mythology to explain creation and our place in the universe. Today, science offers very different explanations through genetics, medicine, technology, and our expanding understanding of the natural world. At the same time, movies, advertising, popular culture, and consumerism constantly give us new images and stories about who we are. "Creation Voodoo" brings all of these influences together. The painting is less about finding one answer to the question of creation and more about looking at the strange mix of beliefs, images, and ideas that shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us.
