Substation 1988

SUBSTATION 1988 STATION ROSE (Elisa Rose / Gary Danner) Digital artwork, 1988/2021 32 sec. audiovisual seamless loop Originally created in 1988 on Commodore Amiga 500 with Deluxe Paint, saved on micro floppy disk. First presented at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, September 1988. In 2019 transferred and emulated on current hardware — bringing one of the earliest examples of computer-generated animation into contemporary presentation contexts. "Substation" (German: Umspannwerk) is part of the STATION ROSE Early Digital Artworks Series — a body of work created from 1988 onwards on Amiga, representing some of the first computer-generated art exhibited in European museum contexts. In 2021, Substation was minted as an NFT on Foundation.app, one of the first curated NFT platforms for digital art. With Foundation's closure in 2026, the work now finds a new home on CIFRA — a platform equally committed to the long-term preservation and contextualisation of new media art. The 2022 presentation at Galerie Charim, Vienna (My Time Has Come) embodied STATION ROSE's phygital approach — the work existed simultaneously as a physical exhibition presence and as an NFT on the blockchain, merging the analog gallery space with its digital counterpart through Augmented Reality.
