Shoaling Occurs

June 2025 - Shoaling Occurs centres around the concept of 'shoaling', exploring the way sound can mirror the behaviour of waves as they slow, rise, and compress when meeting shallower depths. These long, ambient pieces reimagine the vast, arid interior landscapes of Australia as if submerged beneath an ancient, inland ocean. From this submerged perspective — lying at the ocean floor, gazing up at the shimmer of close and distant waves . Cooperback is the recording artist alias for Jez Conlon, Central Australian - Mparntwe - Alice Springs based songwriter, musician, composer and producer. Whilst playing in alt - indie guitar band The Violets (Adelaide Australia) in the 90s, Jez embark on a Composition degree, and formed their own project Cooperblack. Combining found sounds and atmospheres, electronic elements, sometimes a band, sometimes just themselves, always seeking collaborations and joint projects - more recently collabs with long time Cooperblack partner and producer - DJ Tr!p. Cooperblack performed alongside Ben Frost , Gerling, Anticon among others. Jez also composed and plays in Mparntwe duo Mates (guitar voice and loops) - Babes in Caves Ep - and Stellar Sea (bass and voice). This music is created and produced on lands of the Arrernte peoples. Cooperblack would like to acknowledge the elders past and present, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be.
