Seven Mornings on Smallwood Lake

These days I tend to see forms of art — paintings, sculpture, film, photography, writing, websites, memes, among others— as a structures for attention. As an example of what I am calling TimeWeaves, my web-based project Seven Mornings on Smallwood Lake, represents a fresh consideration of what structures for attention might be in future. It is the kind of transubstantiation of time that you can dip in and out of, either engaging with fully or letting run on another screen, as the sound and imagery of water, wind, and birdsong native to upstate New York fill the space around you. Layering video captured during a series of meditative walks and boat excursions around a small, rural lake, the work is in some ways is a response to the anxieties of late modernity. Can anyone deny that we are in the midst of a collective reckoning centred around our absorption in technology and the worlds they render? Is this reality not transforming our very consciousness? Seven Mornings on Smallwood Lake attempts to throw the mechanisms and conventions thought inherent to digital media into reverse, crafting them into something calming, serene, and reflective, sharpening the mind, readying it for moments of redemption and renewal.
