2024 — AI , Photoshop, TouchDesigner As a queer and trans digital media artist, I find meaning in navigating the tension between control and disruption when experimenting with my body, my words, and digital tools to recognize sensuality and eroticism on my own terms. While our digital identities are increasingly shaped by algorithmic programming, I wanted to find (even within these biased and contradictory models) parts of myself and my body that felt empowering and erotic. I’m interested in the ways we can utilize digital media and challenge biased tools to unsettle the boundaries between intimate and mechanical, censored and hyper-visible, and power and representation. As artificial intelligence increasingly shapes visual culture, I needed to interrogate how it conceptualizes, censors, and distorts the body. AI-generated imagery often defaults to hegemonic beauty tropes like whiteness, thinness, and objectified, hypersexual elements, demonstrating the entanglement of dominant media aesthetics and programmer subjectivities. AI’s censorship is also strikingly inconsistent, as an abstract vagina might be flagged as inappropriate while hypersexualized, pornographic images may circulate freely and go unchallenged in digital spaces. This contradiction raises urgent questions for me: Where does AI draw the line between natural and offensive? When AI reconstructs the human form, does it reinforce rigid binaries or imagine/conceive of bodies beyond them? How can AI-generated images compel us to look closer, not only at what we’ve been taught to see as obscene, but at how our bodies are represented, distorted, or erased? Engaging with these tensions, OMGrustaring@myglitchinspiredvulva explores AI’s ability to perceive the body, and a desire to challenge algorithmic biases in order to imagine fluid, subversive forms of the body beyond rigid, hegemonic norms. At its core, the work asks: Where does the body become recognizable, mutated, censored, and still charged with beauty despite all this? The piece reimagines private areas of ourselves as sites of provocation, while embracing the glitzy, contradictory style of the hyper-digital age that amplifies both the artificial and the deeply human.
