間 (Ma)
Ma (間) explores the relationship between the human body and vast natural space through slow movement, breath, and stillness. Filmed in a winter landscape near Little Dell Reservoir in Utah, the work places a solitary figure within snow, deadwood, wind, and open sky. The choreography unfolds through minimal gestures and quiet physical attention, allowing the body to respond to the surrounding environment rather than dominate it. The title refers to the Japanese and Chinese concept “Ma” (間), often translated as “interval,”“gap,” or “space between.” In this work, Ma becomes the invisible field where body, landscape, and perception meet. The distance between sky and earth, between breath and wind, becomes a space of listening and reflection. Rather than presenting nature as scenery, the film treats the landscape as a partner in movement. The body moves slowly through the environment, negotiating scale, silence, and time. In this way, Ma (間) reflects on how human presence can coexist with natural space through attentiveness and restraint.
