"In Place"

Project Link https://timothyufit.cargo.site/in-place-1 "In Place" is a research-led visual project investigating displaced headstones embedded within London’s parks and gardens. Before the twentieth century, many of these public spaces functioned as active burial grounds. As the city expanded and graveyards became overcrowded, burial practices shifted to newly established cemeteries on the outskirts of London. While some graves were reburied, numerous headstones were left behind, relocated, or absorbed into the urban landscape, either hidden behind vegetation or reused for decorative purposes. Detached from the graves they once marked, these stones persist as silent, often overlooked fragments of the city’s past. To this day, displaced headstones remain scattered throughout contemporary London. The project treats these headstones not as memorials in their original sense, but as residual artefacts. They are objects that have lost their primary function yet continue to hold historical, emotional, and material significance. By documenting their locations, surfaces, inscriptions, and state, In Place explores how memory becomes fragmented and redistributed through urban planning, time, and neglect. The headstones are approached as signals of absence: markers of lives, rituals, and spaces that no longer exist in their original form.
