From, maybe To: Prelude is a 3D animated audiovisual short film that introduces the broader project From, maybe To, exploring memory as a transformative force through the fictional reimagining of a single object, the piano. Initially presented as a photogrammetric model, the piano explodes into a constellation of fragments, reassembled by an unknown intelligence into a speculative, hybrid entity. No longer a musical instrument, the piano becomes a metaphorical machine for storing human memories. The work navigates the collapse of binaries such as inside/outside and perception/reality, unfolding in a multidimensional space where the present is both presence and memory. Echoing Plato’s allegory of the cave, Prelude invites the viewer to see beyond shadows, embracing fracture as a site of potential. The film concludes with the implosion of the piano into a single line, a moment that suggests not closure, but infinite possibility, where pressure generates transformation and presence becomes resistance. The sound undergoes a parallel transformation: imagined as lost memory, the piano’s sound is reconstructed using convolution to blend harmonic tones and mechanical noise into a hybrid timbre that never fully reveals the original. These fragments are looped and processed, generating evolving harmonies. At the implosion, the audio shifts abruptly, time-stretched and pitched down, reflecting the visual collapse.
