FAREWELL POEM
Wanxian County is my hometown, an old migrant city from the Three Gorges Dam. I pay close attention to the fact that recording is merely because of thinking fondly. In June 2002, the production unit passed Wanxian County, Yunyang, Fengjie, Wushan, and the ancient town of Dachang, shooting for 14 days; this 9-minute short film "Farewell" was finally cut out. The film has several parts: first, to record the removal of the city and the real life of immigrants during dislocation; then, to record the upcoming or already-ruined ancient cultural remains of the site of the Three Gorges Dam and to document the performance of the Peking Opera "Farewell My Concubine" here in the ruins; and third, to document the performance of the artist in the ruins. The film intertwines these three parts to depict a parting in two different historical contexts, evoking a sense of helplessness. There is no dialog in the work, only the real record, which is “a kind of speech without voice." This film is dedicated to my parents and to the people like them who lived on that land.
