Digital Eden
Contains AI-assisted elements
Essay film, 20 min. Game-engine 3D animation with AI-generated 2D animation. In the old story Eve is expelled for eating the fruit the serpent offers. Here there are countless Eves, and they are waiting. The serpent is the fusion of technology and desire. The apples are digital, and nobody needs them. The bite is a click-through: user agreement, material aspiration, dazzling visual illusion. The trap was never the fruit. It was the clause underneath it. The film builds a Digital Eden — decentralized, free, constructive, a utopian community shaped by modern technology — and then holds still while the value of that world collapses, the way the metaverse and its digital commodities collapsed after the bubble. What survives the collapse is the infrastructure. Looked at again, the new utopia turns out to be a digital upgrade of the commodity economy, an extension of Debord's society of the spectacle, now reinforced by ranking, recommendation, and photorealism, and therefore more seductive and more manipulative than any image that came before it. Power here is not a character. It is architecture — the render engine, the recommendation function, the terms of service, the frame rate that makes desire feel like weather. The work's method is to over-comply: to construct the promised world at full fidelity, at the resolution the industry sells, and keep rendering until the surface reports on its own manufacture. Refusal by excess rather than by argument. What it exposes is not a message hidden inside the image but the mechanism that produced the image, and the ownership structure that mechanism serves. The ending appears optimistic. It leaves the questions open: what would an ideal digital utopia actually consist of, and whether any digital utopia can avoid becoming the next spectacle. The film is made from the same equipment it is about — game engine, real-time rendering, generative model, 3D animation. Nothing is shot. Every surface is computed, and the computation is left visible.
