Through the poem “Self –Portrait in Tyvek ™Windbreaker”, an impersonal garment-the focal point of James Merrill’s fragmentary narratives- becomes an enviable product of our very own privileged elite. The Tyvek Windbreaker functions as an advertised product, destined for consumption, which is however subjected to a significant transformation; it promises happiness. Having no symbolic capital, since it is not unique and rather functions as a vehicle of stereotypical transactions in human relations, it becomes a spectacle, a replica, a reformulation of the world. We see what we look at. Scenes that disintegrate are put back together. Dialogue, words, sounds without continuity of coherence. Like a staged play without a plot that employs a cycle of free-floating images. Events as non-events overlap with each other. The extension of the idea has no concrete effect; it moves towards the absurd. Towards what is not written and remains incomplete. An installation, a dramatic dialogue, as a barrier between ourselves and those around us, a barrier to physical reality.
