Black Høle

'Black Høle' is a short film powered by AI, offering a poignant reflection on the oppressive nature of the Taiwanese education system. In this film, we utilize a black-and-white, doodle-esque acrylic painting style created through the use of Midjourney AI and Runway ML to depict schools as confining prisons that stifle students' free thinking. 'Black Høle' delves into the relentless cycle of studying, exams, and cram schools, driven by parents' skewed beliefs in academic excellence and the toll it takes on students' well-being. This film satirizes the intensity of the director’s childhood while warning against the Taiwanese educational system, which prioritizes rote learning over critical thinking, ultimately leaving students ill-prepared for the challenges posed by the rise of AI and its impact on human intelligence. We begin by creating hand-drawn storyboards, which serve as important reference images for Midjourney. Next, we utilize these finalized Midjourney AI images as input for Runway ML, allowing us to generate motions using the motion brush tool. For voiceover, we recorded the director’s voice and manipulated it using ElevenLabs AI. The process of creating an AI film lies somewhere between traditional filmmaking and animation, which also opens up the possibility of creating beyond the limitations of a single medium.
