(Re)generating the moving body: from classical image tools to generative AI
This collection gathers diverse videodance works that reflect on how creators generate, transform, or reinterpret the dancing human body—ranging from classical techniques to the latest advances in generative AI. PART 1: FROM HUMAN PERFORMANCE TO ENHANCED MOVING FIGURES 'In media res' (Anthony Valon, 2020) A feedback loop between camera and screen generates real-time visual effects, evoking motion-based distortions without digital processing. 'Volatile' (Diego Pérez, 2020) The body dissolves into particles of light, using visual effects to reimagine the dancer as a cloud of movement. PART 2: EDITING THE HUMAN BODY AND OTHER REALITIES 'Autorretrato' (Muriel Sago, 2023) A surreal collage that recomposes the face, exposing the seams of visual identity and post-production. 'Gap' (Elena Muchnaya, 2023) Classical filmmaking meets puppetry and stop-motion to craft a poetic meditation on body and gesture. 'INTERLOOP' (Paul Jacques Yves Guilbert, 2018) Found footage, live performance, and 3D models intersect in a fragmented re-editing of reality. 'Neshamah' (João Pedro Oliveira, 2016) Visual and auditory layers evolve between abstraction and recognition, with painterly precision. PART 3: 3D SYNTHESIS 'Sylphides 3.1' (Diego Mac, 2022) Explores surreal bodily reconstructions via 3D animation, conjuring a poetic fragmentation of limbs and motion. 'IO|OI' (Francesco Lorusso, 2021) A standout fusion of choreography, motion capture, VFX, and cinematography. The dancer’s movement becomes an android figure—a poetic abstraction of the human body beyond its physical limits. Due to its technical complexity and cost, 3D synthesis remains rare in videodance, making these works particularly significant. PART 4: AI STATIC IMAGE-TO-IMAGE TRANSFORMATION 'AI Transcendence' (Florencia S.M. Brück, 2023) Static frames are reimagined through AI-driven transformations, morphing the human figure into dreamlike forms. This trend surged in 2023, but its popularity was short-lived, as flickering between frames and lack of movement control often disrupted choreographic integrity. PART 5: AI VIDEO-TO-VIDEO TRANSFORMATION In 2024, a new technique emerged: AI-based video hybridization. It involves merging a source video with other images or clips, creating visually surreal, layered compositions. 'Ecocide' (Valeriya Koptseva, 2024) Human figures merge with trees in stark black-and-white scenes, creating an evolving, vegetal-human hybrid. 'Domestic Survival' (Isobel Blank, 2024) A selfie becomes the base for a metamorphosis into fungi-inspired forms—melding domestic banality with fantastical biology. 'Hyper' (Alessandro Amaducci, 2024) and 'Allegorithmic' (2025) Amaducci embraces AI’s limitations, transforming them into expressive tools. His bodies mutate through rhythmic, high-energy editing—revealing a surreal, sometimes monstrous beauty that avoids the aesthetic clichés and conceptual emptiness often associated with AI-based work. As of now, AI’s most effective role in videodance appears in video-to-video synthesis—where choreography is already present, and AI acts as an interpretive lens. The most compelling results emerge when digital tools are fully integrated with conceptual clarity, movement design, and cinematographic intention. Without that unity, technological novelty alone fails to create meaningful artistic impact.
