Don't Watch This
On August 12, the Moon passes in front of the Sun. An eclipse is usually something we gather to see. This time – DON’T. Put on your headphones. Pump up the volume. Start the first work. Hear the voice. Go with it. And turn off your screen. Don't skip. Don't scroll. Don't watch this. Just listen. The idea is coming from Pauline Oliveros' practice of Deep Listening*: listening not only to what demands our attention, but to everything happening around it. Sound, silence, space, memory. What is close. What is far away. What we normally edit out. Keep your screen dark. When the final work begins, turn it back. You’re out of the eclipse now. Open your eyes. *More about Deep Listening: ▫️first, listen to everything around you as a whole — yes, even random noises, and yes, even the voice inside your head; ▫️then, start noticing individual sounds and what the whole soundscape is made of; ▫️and finally, pay attention to the connections between those sounds, the space around you, and yourself.
