Claudia Hart: Politics Without Slogans

Claudia Hart is a pioneer of digital and intermedia art, has just been awarded the ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award 2026 for Lifetime Achievement. She has always worked ahead of her time. She used digital tools early, not because they were new, but because they allowed her to think differently about images, bodies, and power. She has spent decades insisting on things that were often dismissed—decoration, femininity, ornament, feeling—and taking them seriously. She grew up in a household where television was rationed, dinner was for conversation, and opinions had to be argued for. Museums mattered. Books mattered. Liking something was never enough—you had to explain why. That training stayed with her. Hart learned early to think clearly, speak precisely, and live with the feeling of being out of sync. Her work reflects that independence. She brings art history into digital space without irony, and politics into beauty without slogans. Teddy bears curse. Children’s books quote Machiavelli. Avatars age, decay, or try to escape their own screens. Sweetness, for Hart, is never harmless. It is a strategy—patient, disarming, and exact. ❝ I don’t like to define myself by what I do. Also, it’s a test of the other. Do they? Does it really matter who I am or what I do? I’m not boring. That should be enough.❞ What runs through all of it is persistence. Hart never tried to fit in, and never waited for permission. She followed her interests, lost jobs, moved countries, stayed stubbornly herself, and kept working. The questions return, again and again, in different forms. Who is seen. Who is heard.
